NIGERIA: BILLIONS OF UNCLAIMED DIVIDENDS – YOU OR A FAMILY MEMBER MAY BE LISTED

Many Nigerians do not know of the high backlog of unclaimed dividends in the Nigerian capital market. You may have unclaimed dividends either from your personal investments, or from a parent, a grand parent, a spouse, or any other family member.

A lot of Nigerians invested in the stock market and just forgot about their investments. However, It is possible that your forgotten investments may be accruing dividends, which you are yet to claim.

Only about N30billion has been paid from the backlog of unclaimed dividends worth over N80billion (Vanguard Nigeria – As of January 2017).

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC Nigeria) has created an e-dividend portal to reduce the high incidence of unclaimed dividends, but most investors have not registered to this portal. Investors are therefore encouraged to register.

The purpose of the e-dividend portal is for all investors who have unclaimed dividends to register for the electronic collection of their unclaimed dividends and subsequent dividends. The e-dividend portal will also enable the proceeds from their secondary market transactions to be credited to their preferred Bank Account (Direct Cash Settlement) ~ (SEC Nigeria).

SEC Nigeria opened a database of non-mandated accounts to help investors check whether they have unclaimed dividends and provide information for easy registration to the e-dividend portal.

How to Check and Claim Your Dividends

Follow the link below to check if you or your family members have unclaimed dividends. You will need to type just your name.

www.sec.gov.ng/non-mandated/

Once you have confirmed an unclaimed dividend under your name, the process is easy:

  1. Take note of your Registrar’s name
  2. Note the name of the company you have their shares
  3. Take note of your investment account number
  4. Click on the link at the top of the SEC Portal and download your Registrar’s e-mandate form
  5. Complete the form and send it to your local bank or your Registrar’s office with a copy of your passport photo.

That’s it! Your Bank or your Registrar will do the rest! Once you have been verified and processed, you will receive all your unclaimed dividends. They will be paid into your chosen bank account.

VIDEO: How to Claim Your Dividends In Nigeria

You Should Act Fast

  1. By February 28, 2018, physical dividend warrants will no longer be issued. This means that if you did not sign up for the e-dividends, you stand the risk of losing all your unclaimed dividends.
  2. SEC is bearing the cost of the registration now, so it is FREE
  3. By February 28, 2018, the registration to the e-dividend portal will no longer be free. You will then have to pay a fee to be registered.

If you have ever invested in the Nigerian capital market, go ahead and just check, it is free until February 28, 2018. If you have a  deceased family member, check the name, they may have unclaimed dividends. In this case, follow up with your local bank for the recovery process. Take advantage of this opportunity. Remember, every penny counts!

Update: March 19, 2019:

Huge traffic from this post has caused SEC’s e-dividend portal to crash. Read what to do on this recent post here:

  • Anyanwu Callistus Ibe

Dr Charity, I like your effort. My name is Anyanwu Callistus, I bought former Intercontinental shears with ACB as well, up till date I was not communicated or received any dividends, hence the two bank were acquired by other banks, and I tried typing my name and my wife’s name and it couldn’t show. What do I do now?

    • Hello Callistus, thanks for the compliment. If your name is not listed, I will assume that no dividends were paid before the acquisition. Also the terms of the acquisition will determine what becomes of the acquired shares afterwards. Try researching the terms of the acquisition, and see how the shares of the acquired firms were treated. Let me know if you need further help on this.

    • Olubimpe Omolabake Gbaiye

Hi, I bought 5000 units of japaul oil IPO in 2007 through firstinland bank and I have not recieve my certificate or dividend since then neither did I recieve a refund if not allotted. I have written to the registrar PACE but no response. What should I do?

      • admin

Did you receive any documentation when you bought the shares? If so, I will suggest you continue to follow up with the Registrar and attach the documents you received. Find the phone number and call as well. If possible, visit their office.
Meanwhile, you can still go ahead and check if your name is listed for any unclaimed dividend. You can send the e-mandate application to your bank.

  • Anthonia chigozie ogbonna

Hi Dr. Charity, thanks for this information.
I live in diaspora and I have been putting in my hubby name and mine but is not coming up.we have shares with ECO BANK and since 2013 he passed on even before then we have never received any dividends from ECO BANK . Please what do I do?
    Antonia chigozie ogbonna

    • Hello Anthonia, please note that not all companies pay dividends. The database is for paid dividends that are not yet claimed. If the company has not paid any dividends, there will be no name reported. What you can also do is to type just the last name and see what comes up. Many times, people use different names; but searching with the last name pulls out all the records on that last name. I hope this helps.

  • David Komolafe

Please, is Daar Communication paying dividends?

    • Hello David, please use the link provided and search for your name. If your name is listed, it means you have an unclaimed dividend. You will also see the name of the company whose dividends you are yet to claim.

  • Onyinye Chima-Offiah

Doctor charity ,good afternoon to you ma. I was so impressed with your comments on the Nigerian stock market which has made a lot of Nigerians lose fortune . I bought shares with the defunct bank PHB but I have never heard anything till the bank was bought . My sister also bought with sky bank and since 2017 and she’s yet to get a dividend . Please i want to know where to get the names checked on the this platform

The link is no working again, maybe because this is March. Is there another link to be able to check again ? Thank you

      • Hello! I have seen my name appeared but I have never bought shares before I don’t know if my late dad bought shares in my name since his name also appeared. Please I need advice since I’m just finding out about this. He’s been dead for thirty years now

  • Rotimi Innocent

Pls Dr, if the owner of the share with accrued dividends is deceased how do the wife or the children lay claim or change the account? Thanks.

    • Hello Rotimi, the wife or the children should contact their own bank or the Registrar. They are in the best position to assist. One thing I know is that they will require death certificate among other things they may need. So, the first thing will be to contact the Bank or the Registrar.

      I hope this helps.

  • Kwada Asunduwa Chagwa

    Hello,
    Good morning Sir/ma’am
I am a shareholder of NAHCO, Zenith Bank and Union Bank, since 2006. I have never missed Zenith Bank dividend warrants, but never received even for once the one of Union Bank dividend warrants while NAHCO has been given intermittently.
How would weathygen.org help me claim my dividend warrants from Union Bank and NAHCO companies.

    • admin

      Hello Kwada,

Please follow the simple steps outlined in the blog. You would first check that your name appears in the list of unclaimed dividends. if you see your name, you can then download and complete the form and send to your local bank.

    • Hello! I have seen my name appeared but I have never bought shares before I don’t know if my late dad bought shares in my name since his name also appeared. Please I need advice since I’m just finding out about this. He’s been dead for thirty years now

      • admin

        Hi Vincent,

Banks may ask for more documentation as they review your application. It may be difficult to prove you are the true owner of the unclaimed dividends if you do not have documentation proving your ownership.

  • Millicent Nkechi Kezie-Azikiwe

Good day ma’am, just getting this information about the emandate dividend payment today being the 16th March, 2019 from s WhatsApp chat group. Never heard nor came across it before except now

Found my late father’s name, what do I do now? Is it too late to claim?

    • admin

      Hello Nkechi,

Its not too late. Follow the simple steps outlined in the blog and complete the form. Send it to your local bank, they will do the rest. For your late father’s, they will likely request for death certificate. Please verify with your bank what their requirements are.

  • Diji Adeyanju

Good Afternoon, Thank you for this information. Just found names of relatives on it, is it still possible to start the process of reclaiming dividends please?

    • admin

      Hello Diji,

Its not late. You can still begin the process now.

  • Ola

Hello Dr Charity. Thanks for this. Pardon me, but this is just reaching me today and I’m able to found names of my late parents. May I ask if it’s still possible to process the reclaiming of their dividends please?

    Many thanks!

  • Caleb Adeyemi

Thanks for this, I have found my name on the list.
I have a unique challenge however. My stockbroker misarranged my name when buying the stock initially. He repeated my first name as my middlename.. so instead of A B C, He wrote my name as A B A. how do I proceed?

    • admin

      Hello Caleb,

You can still complete the form and discuss with your bank about the error in the name. They are in the best position to advise you on this.

  • Rita

I found my without account number so plz how do I go from there.thank

    • admin

      Hi Rita,

You can still complete the form with the rest of the information. You can discuss with your bank about the account number when you go to submit.

  • Dr Nihinlola Mabogunje

Greetings just learned about this site few hours ago and I have unclaimed dividends. What is your advice.

    • admin

      Hi Dr. Mabogunje,

See the process below; this is also stated in the blog.

Once you have confirmed an unclaimed dividend under your name, the process is easy:

      Note your Registrar’s name
Note the name of the company you have their shares
      Note your investment account number
Click on the link at the top of the page and download your Registrar’s e-mandate form
Complete the form and send to your local bank or your Registrar’s office with a copy of your passport photo.

That’s it! Your Bank or your Registrar will do the rest, and once verified and processed, all your unclaimed dividends will be paid into your chosen bank account.

  • Ronald Adekunle Olofintuyi

    Can i still register?
I am just seeing this message

    • admin

      Olufintuyi,

      Yes, you can still register.

  • Abutu Emmanuel

Weldon Charity. I bought shares from pertinership investment since 2007 or there about. they are since listed on the capital market but all effort to here from them proved abortive. Thanks.

    • admin

You are welcome. Please note that not all companies pay dividend. If you bought shares and you didn’t see your name, it is possible that the company has not paid any dividends yet.

  • Stanley onyeji

But a lot of share holders have gone through this process especially through their bankers only to be told by their registrars that they did not receive their forms and their bankers usually refuse to give acknowledgement copy.whenever you come to them, they usually say they have uploaded to their registrars thru NIBSS and should contact their stockbrokers. So no proper feedback.it will appear the system is not working well.Except you submit the completed form straight to the registrars. Efforts should be made to streamline this.thanks

    • admin

Thanks for your feedback. I will encourage you not to give up especially when you have outstanding dividends. CBN is really serious about these unclaimed dividends. So, submitting directly to the Registrars will be a good strategy if your bank does not respond.

  • Cajetan Onyebuchukwu

The Registrars create unnecessary bottlenecks thereby making it very difficult for shareholders to claim their dividends. Some don’t honour E-div. mandates. They tell you that your specimen signature is not in their system. They end up investing the unclaimed div.and make money for themselves.

  • ola A

thanks for sharing this information. I just stumbled on this website, I have taken the step above and actually sent the completed form to my bank. My question is,
1.will I get a message from the companies I have shares with or they will just credit me automatically from now on?
    2. Will they still pay me the ones I’ve not claimed in years?

    • WealthyGen

      Hi Ola,

The goal is that they will deposit the dividends directly into your chosen account. I am not sure if you will receive any notification. Also, if you have any unclaimed dividends from prior years, you will be paid those as well.

      Thanks.

Some Registrars have different requirements, but for the most part, they will require a power of attorney from family members authorizing you to claim the unpaid dividends. I described the general process here:https://youtu.be/oOe4GpV1Lho
